私の場合最近こうやって品詞分解してきっちり読む気ことが少ないのですが、
久々にポイントを示してみました。

が質問ポイントでしたね。
結論から言うと
as に続く文に動詞と主語、目的語、補語が揃っている場合は接続詞です。
接続詞としての as は時を表す場合と理由を表す場合があります。
ではas she observed these magnificent creatures.
は どちらになるでしょうか？
